If you didn't catch the fantastic Self Adjacent exhibition at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond during the final months of 2023, this January provides one more opportunity to experience it. It's a group exhibition, curated by Visual Arts Center instructor Sarah Irvin and arts PhD Tracy Stonestreet, who oversees the galleries at the University of Mary Washington. Self Adjacent is an exhibition all about the experience of parenthood, with its transformative power in the lives of artists and the work that they produce.
Crossroads Art Center – 2016 Staples Mill Rd., Richmond, VA 23230
January is a big month for the Crossroads Art Center, with the annual unveiling of the first new exhibitions of the year during the January 2024 Open House & Artist Reception, which takes place on the evening of January 19, 2024. This event will reveal the new Fantasy exhibition produced entirely by gallery members, and the Juried All Media Show, which includes entries from many local artists. The featured exhibition for winter 2024 is the Jos Biviano Exhibition, which highlights the work of talented, Richmond-based landscape artist Jos Biviano.

If you're looking for the most variety in terms of exhibitions, there's no doubt that the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is the place to be. Of note are some long-running, popular exhibitions which will be wrapping up their run in January, making this the last time to see them. These include Face and Figure: Recent Acquisitions in Photography, Visions of Stately India: The Talegaonkar Collection of Indian Paintings, The Art of Advertisement: Art Nouveau Posters of the Late 19th Century, Athena LaTocha: The Past Never Sleeps, Cy Twombly, Morocco, 1952/1953, and Dawoud Bey: Elegy. Visit to experience these exhibitions, along with the many new and continuing exhibitions on display throughout 2024.

The Richmond Public Library is the perfect place to visit if you want to experience the work of new and emerging Richmond artists. Their First Fridays program features gallery openings where local artists can showcase their work, and connect with the community. The debut of First Fridays for 2024 will take place on January 5, starting at 6:30 PM. January also brings an exciting performance for lovers of orchestral works, with the Thomas Pandolfi concert on January 13, 2024, commemorating the 175th anniversary of famed composer Frederic Chopin's passing.
