National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day takes place on April 30th, and we can't think of a better way to show your love of animals than to bring home a new dog or cat. Just remember that owning a pet is a big responsibility, beginning on the first day you bring him or her home.

There are several shelters near Richmond homes for sale where you can find a wonderful pet. To get you started, our real estate agents have put together some tips to help you get your home ready for your new furry member of the family:

Start with Pet-Proofing
One of the first things you'll want to consider is pet-proofing your home. Your new pet will definitely be very curious, and you don't want them to get hurt. Make sure that chemicals, toys with small pieces, medications, and even electronic cords are out of reach. You also want to be careful with anything they might try to eat or lick, such as unfriendly plants or certain types of foods.
Clean From Top to Bottom
Pets, especially dogs, are notorious for chewing on anything they find. You'll want to clean your home from top to bottom. This includes vacuuming the carpet, sweeping dirty floors, wiping down the kitchen, etc. You should also place any valuable items into sealed storage containers that the pet won't be able to access.
Prepare a Personal Space
Every pet you bring into your home should be given a personal space of their very own. If you're adopting a dog, this could be either a dog bed or a crate if they've been properly trained. For cats, you can pick up a cat tree - or a cat condo if you want to be fancy - which will double as a scratching post. Feeling safe is very important for all types of animals, especially when you get one from a shelter.
Pick Up Several Pet Toys
Dogs and cats explore with their mouths, which is why both need a variety of toys. Balls of yarn and various cat toys will keep cats entertained, while chew toys will stop dogs from chewing on other things. This will also help them feel more welcome in your home and reduce any anxiety they feel from leaving the shelter, traveling in the car, etc.
Stock Up on Pet Supplies
Depending on whether you get a dog or cat, you may need collars, leashes, potty bags, ID tags, scratching posts, etc. You also want to pick up plenty of cat litter for your new cat or maybe some pee pads for a dog that's yet to be house-trained. And, of course, don't forget to grab some treats for your new pet.
